Rich Mix - tonight - fearless women - performance

http://www.richmix.org.uk/aandc_oneuponedown.htm

off to check this out tonight - Thursday 25 March 2010 - looking good. here's the write up from the site:

Enter the dark world of consumerism as three dynamic and vocal women struggle to create a sense of their own worth and identity from deep within the clutches of consumerism. With fearless performances of compelling choreography, this is a comedic flurry of dancetheatre, song and tightly wrought performance poetry.

“A wry comment on the pressures of being a woman in a high-achieving, consumerist society, the show lays bare the dark side of the quest for physical perfection with an honesty Naomi Wolf would be proud of.” FestMag

I've just got to say...

I saw All The King's Men cabaret show last night and it was outstanding.

Side-splittingly funny, and perfect for that late night, stumble upon in a dark London theatre in the arches under Charing Cross type of night.
If you can - do try and get down tonight for just one hour at 10pm, it says a lot about what our festiavl is about, it's questioning, challenging but funny and fabulous and entertaining all at the same time. We call it gender-bending-queer-cabaret :)
Their blurb:
Their ever-changing show features a troupe of six prolific artists who collectively play between thirty and fifty gender bending characters per performance. Incorporating pop-cultural satire, dance, scene work, storytelling, socio-political commentary, burlesque, multi-media, comedy and drama, All The Kings Men seek to create unique experiences that excite, engage, educate and entertain.
It's what ya need.

Also they have a proper film made abut them, here's the trailer.
Coming to a film festival near you. Soon.

i get a bit lost at times, like when she looks like Amy Winehouse and Madonna combined with the bad lingerie to boot.
but it has aspects of brilliance, intelligence, magic. but I dunno, I always feel like Gaga + Akerlund always fall just wide of the mark. it's like two different concepts fighting. which may be the point.
i actually think i prefer the weird gun toting video of this tune tho.
hmm. she fascinates me.
the other night as i was walking through Charing Cross, one of those guys who fixes the Underground, after it closes, was loitering for the last tube and called after me "hey - Gaga!"

Iman

I found this interview really interesting and moving.

From You Tube:
"Iman is famous worldwide as a supermodel, successful businesswoman and fashion icon alongside her husband David Bowie. That's just the beginning -- she is also a refugee. Born in Somalia, Iman and her family fled war in the 1970s, making their way to Kenya on foot. Discovered there by fashion photographer Peter Beard, Iman came to the U.S. and took the fashion world by storm, breaking barriers as a supermodel and businesswoman. She also became a leading activist for peace in Africa.

In this wide-ranging interview in honor of International Women's Day, Iman talks with the Enough Project's John Prendergast about her remarkable life, her activism and her take on war in the Congo -- the deadliest war in the world."

Iman's charity Raise Hope For Congo: http://www.raisehopeforcongo.org

To protect and empower Congolese women and girls, the RAISE Hope for Congo campaign works to:

  • Raise awareness about the crisis, the resulting widespread sexual violence against women and girls, and the solutions that are necessary to end the conflict.
  • Increase news coverage of the conflict in eastern Congo.
  • Build a movement of activists who can advocate effectively for change.
  • Influence and change policy on the Congo through promotion of the 4Ps: Peace, Protection, Punishment, and Prevention; the four ingredients necessary to END the mass violence against women in Congo.

Enough is enough.

Congo is not hopeless. There are solutions. Together, we can stop the violence.

Where there is hope there can be peace.

Gaga over Gaga

Stefani's in the press here in London with this fabulous quote:

"Orgasms are the biggest obstacles for women,” she complained. “Sex should be fun, beautiful and colourful but women get the short end of the stick. We're just receivers. We can't talk about sex, we can't sing about sex."

I sincerely look forward to hearing a new song about orgasm. I very much look forward to her open dialogue about sex. Come on Gaga - one for the ladies!

Working on The Vagina Monologues makes you realise that we don't say much about it! As one of the opening lines says "Women secretly love to talk about their vaginas". Hanging out talking about vaginas is pretty liberating - as I'm sure our actresses will tell you!

It's pretty incredible that over ten years after Eve Ensler wrote The Vagina Monologues that Lady Gaga's comment shows it is still relevant.

Ahem, "If your vagina could talk - what would it say?"

See the show!

Oh heavens.

It's a badly thought up US public service film. Salon.com do the write up - check it here.

In better news, we're screening the totally excellent public service film 'Leaving' - starring Kierston Wareing (Fish Tank) and Johnny Harris (London to Brighton) during SYNT festival at The New Players. Like no public service film you've ever seen before.

Kierston and Johnny will be coming down to do a Q+A so do come and check it out. Tickets HERE.

King Leopold's Ghost

Amazon Review:

King Leopold of Belgium, writes historian Adam Hochschild in this grim history, did not much care for his native land or his subjects, all of which he dismissed as "small country, small people." Even so, he searched the globe to find a colony for Belgium, frantic that the scramble of other European powers for overseas dominions in Africa and Asia would leave nothing for himself or his people. When he eventually found a suitable location in what would become the Belgian Congo, later known as Zaire and now simply as Congo, Leopold set about establishing a rule of terror that would culminate in the deaths of 4 to 8 million indigenous people, "a death toll," Hochschild writes, "of Holocaust dimensions." Those who survived went to work mining ore or harvesting rubber, yielding a fortune for the Belgian king, who salted away billions of dollars in hidden bank accounts throughout the world. Hochschild's fine book of historical inquiry, which draws heavily on eyewitness accounts of the colonialists' savagery, brings this little-studied episode in European and African history into new light.

TinTin to be sued for Congo book

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/belgium/6123343/Tintin-to-be-sued-for-Congo-book.html

Bienvenu Mbutu Mondondo, 41, is taking legal action claiming Hergé's controversial Tintin In The Congo is propaganda for colonialism and amounts to "racism and xenophobia"

Mr Mbutu Mondondo launched a case in Belgium two years ago for symbolic damages of one euro from Tintin's Belgian publishers Moulinsart, and demanded the book be withdrawn from the market.

I'm amazed it's still on Amazon's shelves. Seems to have been pulled from everywhere else.

It's Belgian. More in the next post.

Tintin in the Congo

Amazon description
"The young reporter Tintin and his faithful dog Snowy set off on assignment to Africa. But a sinister stowaway follows their every move and seems set on ensuring they come to a sticky end. Tintin and Snowy encounter witch doctors, hostile tribesmen, crocodiles, boa constrictors and numerous other wild animals before solving the mystery and getting their story. First published in book form in 1931 (in black & white only), Tintin in the Congo reflects the colonial attitudes of that period in its depiction of African people. Herge himself admitted that he was influenced by the bourgeois, paternalistic stereotypes of the period. This is also true of the treatment of big-game hunting and the attitude towards animals. All copies of the book will be displayed with a belly-band advertising its content."

open letter to Mr Tinie Tempah

whose new single "Pass Out" is released today.

Dear Mr Tempah

I recently heard your single 'Pass Out'.

Now I must admit I was rather bowled over by its surging rhythms, solid bass, delicious melody and, the down to earth, honest lyricism of an apparently charming young man from Greenwich (I also admit to following your excellent blog - Milk and 2 sugars).

However, there are a few lines that are conspicuous in their tone. I wish only to ask for further clarification of their meaning and your intention in including them in the song. Perhaps the record company asked you to do it? In that by being mean you would seem tougher, edgier, 'street'?

Anyway I shall attempt to hold back on speculation and simply ask that you please explain why you chose to include in this seminal first release the following lyrics:

"I chirps her just for fun, I never ever call her phone, I leave her in the club, i never ever walk her home,"

Now it's not nice and it's not clever, and I must also admit to having high hopes for you as you seem like such a stand up young chap.

So, having earlier informed us that you do in fact "...bring the women and the cars and the cards out" - would it be too much to ask that you drop the young lady home afterwards?

I look forward to hearing from you.

Warmest regards
